Hi, My name is Leighann Sanders and I will be teaching Middle School Math and Pre-Algebra starting in the Fall 2023. I grew up in a Christian home, was saved at a young age, and was homeschooled through High school. I went to college in Pennsylvania for Secondary Mathematics Education, and after graduation I married my Homeschool/highschool sweetheart who had joined the Navy. Over the past 12+ years, God and the Navy have allowed us to live in Connecticut, Hawaii and now here in Virginia Beach. We have 3 boys, Jacob (5th grade), Aaron (2nd grade) and Caleb (1st grade) who will be students here at Global Christian Co-op. I have homeschooled my boys for 3 years now, and I look forward to continuing this 4th year with the added fun of such a great co-op!

​Middle School Math
​Course Description: Students will explore math in the following areas: numbers, geometry, measurement, algebra, and probability. Students will grow in their understanding of the relationship between numbers and the world. Topics include: irrational numbers, scientific notation, volume and surface area. Students will be learning to construct angles and segments using a straight edge and compass. They will study different transformations and practice finding similar figures. Students will learn the concept of variables and algebraic expressions. They will solve one- and two-step equations. Finally, they will explore probability and variation creating, analyzing and visualizing data sets.
Course Objective: This course is intended to teach, reinforce, and strengthen the student’s foundational math skills. Students exiting the lower elementary grades will require this solid foundation prior to taking Pre-Algebra in Middle School or High School. With Algebra I, II, and Geometry on the horizon, students who master these foundational skills will be well-prepared for the next level of Math.
​The Grade 7 math textbook reviews foundational math concepts from elementary math and dives into middle school math concepts. Students will review whole numbers, decimals, integers, fractions, measurements, and geometry, and they will extend their knowledge of square roots, exponents, algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, percentages, functions, probability, surface area and volume, and statistics. Each exercise set includes a spiral review of previously learned concepts.
Pre-Algebra
​Course Description: Students will use KUTA worksheets, videos and online interactives to explore the world of Pre-algebra. Students will engage in problem solving, graphing, quizzes and projects. Students will apply transformations to two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures and observe geometric properties. They will use algebraic expressions, equations, or inequalities in one variable to represent and evaluate a given situation. They will apply basic concepts of set theory and also determine subsets, complements, intersection, and union of sets. Students will utilize equations, tables and graphs to analyze and interpret linear functions and make inferences from statistical data.
​Course Objective: This course is intended to teach, reinforce, and strengthen the student’s Pre-Algebra math skills. Students in the Middle School/Early High School grades will require this solid foundation of Pre-Algebra before tackling traditional high school math. With Algebra I, II, and Geometry on the horizon, students who master these Pre-Algebra l skills will be well-prepared for the next level of Math.
​Pre-Algebra
Algebraic expressions and linear equations are applied throughout a thorough review of operations on integers, fractions, decimals, percents, and radicals. Students explore relations and functions using equations, tables, and graphs. Chapters on statistics and geometry extend foundational concepts in preparation for high school courses.
